Florida sues Discord, saying the platform deceived families about child safety

October 15, 2026 · Sunshine State Wire

Attorney General Uthmeier's suit accuses Discord of marketing itself as safe for kids while running little real age verification. Discord says the suit misstates the platform it built.

Attorney General James Uthmeier filed suit against Discord on Thursday, accusing the messaging platform of marketing itself as safe for kids while running little real age verification — a combination the state says let adults pose as minors and prey on children.

The suit, filed in Glades County after a six-month investigation, claims deceptive trade practices, public nuisance, and negligence. Florida seeks an injunction and penalties of up to $10,000 per willful violation — up to $150,000 where Discord knew a Florida child was under 18 — plus court-ordered changes to the platform. The Attorney General estimates damages could reach hundreds of millions of dollars.

Discord says the suit's characterization doesn't reflect the platform it built or its safety investments, noting it has no algorithmic feed. The case follows Florida actions against Roblox, Snapchat, Meta, and TikTok.
